A short lecture on poultry was given by Mr Tracey King, of Riverton. Mr King also judged the flowers. Mrs Mitchell presented a box of crockery to Mrs J. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Lindsay, Templeton, Bone, Paterson, Brooker and Mitchell.

CRICKET The annual report of the Otautau Cricket Club states that a team was again entered in the Central-Western District competition, and although it was unsuccessful in retaining the premiership and the Boyle Cup, excellent cricket was enjoyed, with some very close and interesting matches. Fourteen matches were played by the club, nine being won and five lost. With 18 points on the championship ladder the club finished third, equal with Winton, in the competition. The following players were congratulated on their performances in competition matches:— Batting, Melton 104 (not out), Chisholm 104, Stevens 102 (not out), Whitehead 71, Buxton 59, and Miller 54 (not out); bowling, Melton, with an average for the season of 7.55, Chisholm 8.30, J. P. Smith 8.70, and Fisher 10.04. During the season three friendly matches were played with town teams, Union coming to Otautau twice and Herbert, Haynes once. Congratulations were extended to Messrs Fisher, Chisholm, Stevens, Melton and Whitehead on being selected to represent the district. Messrs Fisher and Stevens hold second and third place respectively on the list of batting averages, while Chisholm and Melton take fifth and sixth place in the bowling. Mr Chisholm is also to be congratulated on being selected to play for the Southland B team at Invercargill. At the end of last season the club lost an enthusiastic member and player in Mr G. H. Smith, who was transferred from the town. He was a practical supporter of the club, both as an executive officer and a player,

TOWN BOARD

The following commissioners were present at the monthly meeting of the Town Board: Messrs A. Liddell (chairman), E. Harrington, F. J. Stephens, J. Scatter, L. Campbell and G. B. Burns. The Commissioner of Crown Lands, Invercargill, wrote stating that the Aparima River was washing away part of Mr Burns’s property and the members of the River Board had agreed that some protective work was necessary. As the River Board was unable to carry out the work, he suggested that unemployed men be engaged. The clerk reported that the River Board had decided to supply the material, on the understanding that Mr Burns would do the work.

It was decided that the services of unemployed men be granted if they were required. The foreman drew attention to the fact that Rye street was in a bad state of repair. The creek rising in Mr Currie’s property and flowing into the Otautau stream also required cleaning out.

It was decided that the works committee inspect the former, and that pro-perty-owners be notified to clean out the creek.

The chairman reported that Mr Chandler had secured an extension of time to make a report on the fire-en-gine, and suggested that the chairman and members of the board visit Winton to inspect the equipment there. Mr Liddell said that Mr Stenhouse had extended an invitation to them to see the machine at work, and he would also give a demonstration. It was left in the hands of the chairman to arrange the visit.

GIRL GUIDES Mrs Chisholm presided at the annual meeting of the Girl Guides. In her report she stated that the roll number was seven rangers, twenty-two guides and fourteen brownies. They were unfortunate in losing two of their foundation members, Porteous and Brass, the former having been president for several years. They had presented them with thanks badges before leaving. They had also lost the services of Miss Porteous, who had been Brown Owl for two years. Miss Mavis Smart had been appointed to that position and Miss Alys Chilton as Tawny Owl. The resignation of Miss Dorothy Mills as captain of the rangers had been received with regret. The successful competitors for the Herbert Smith Cup were Guide Dorothy Baker and Brownie Eileen Ballam. One of the most important happenings during the year was the purchase of the new guide room, which they now owned in conjunction with the scouts.

The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Chisholm; vicepresidents, Mesdames Chandler and Saxelby; secretary and treasurer, Mrs G. H. Stevens; auditor, Miss Shaw; committee, Mesdames Reekie, Fisher’ McMillan, McCulloch, Bird, Harrington, Simon, Saunders, Renowden, Leckie, Maxwell, White, Silverwood and Smart and Miss Fraser.
