SURFACEMAN’S DISMISSAL.

To the Editor. Sir, —Please allow me to give an illustration of what the worker is to expect from the employing bodies, and to warn Labour that this is what to expect unless they get busy on thenown behalf and do not leave too much for Parliament to do. Recently one of the Southland County surfacemen was given notice that his services were to be dispensed with at the end of August. This happened, but a casual man has been kept on in his place. Now, sir, I would like to know from the Southland County Council why this man was put off, as no complaints had ever been received by him as to the nature of his work. He had been for 25 years on the job, which to me spells ability and to all who came in contact with him. He was known as a sober, industrious, and in every way suitable man for the job he held. Might I state that this man has a family of seven children under the age of 15 years and consequently has now been compelled by circumstances to join up with the local unemployed. This sort of treatment is surely unwarranted, and I think that the Southland County Council and Mr F. Trapski in particular will find it very difficult to justify their action.—Yours, ate., RURAL DELIVERY. Gore, September 11, 1936.

[Mr F. Trapski, chairman of the Southland County Council to whom this letter was referred, would make no comment other than that the council had reconsidered the man’s case and adhered to its previous decision.]
