BRITISH POST OFFICE SAVINGS BANK
HIGHER AVERAGE DEPOSIT.
(British Official Wireless.)
(Rec. 5.5 n.m.) Rugby, September 16. The Post Office Savings Bank was opened 75 years ago to-day. From the beginning the bank has made uninterrupted progress. When it was opened in 1861, 300 post offices were authorized to conduct Savings Bank business; within three months the number was 1700, and to-day it is 16,500. There are now about 10,000,000 depositors, and the total amount owned by them exceeds £414,000,000. The average deposit of £4l compares with £3l five years ago—an indication both of the more prosperous condition of the country and the increased popularity of the Savings Bank.
