POULTRY NOTES

-BY

A. PEAT

The official column of the Invercargill Poultry, Pigeon, Canary and Pet Club, and the Southland Poultry Producers’ Federation.

In last week’s notes when reporting on the Border canaries imported by L. and M. Taylor I omitted to say they were imported from Australia. At the monthly meeting of the Invercargill Poultry Producers’ Federation Mr J. E. Jeffcoate presided. It was resolved to write to the Poultry Board and ask if it was its intention to appoint an inspector for Invercargill, if so would it be prepared to accept a recommendation from this branch if a suitable man could be found. The selling price of six to eight weeks old pullets was fixed at 5/each.

After the meeting Mr J. E. Clent gave an interesting address on “The Care of Growing Stock.”

“To start at the beginning you must have type and constitution in your breeding pen, otherwise your task is hopeless, for how can you expect to rear healthy chickens from weak parents?” Mr Clent. “Do not on any account set eggs under 2oz or your pullets will lay undersized eggs. You must have age on one side of your breeding stock. If the male is a cockerel the females should be one year old hens or over, or vice versa. The most important thing after you have hatched your chickens is to see that they are fed right as it is in the feeding of chiqkens that many a good bird is spoilt. Give your chickens plenty of good wholesome food, grit and clean water, and never be afraid to change the water often, especially in the hot weather.

“Chickens do not require any food until they are at least 36 hours old or even more. The first four days I give them chick food and then on to the following mash: 6 lb of pollard, 3 bran, | meatmeal, j skim milk powder, and 1 per cent, of cod liver oil. I continue with this until they are at least four months old, then change over to the laying mash. It is a mistake to force your pullets and get them to lay at five or even four months as they are not developed and cannot possibly stand up to the strain of heavy laying. Always separate your cockerels from your pullets as soon as you can distinguish them as the cockerels being stronger will always fight for and claim the best of the food. Culling is one of the main things and should begin when the chickens hatch and be continued right through.” Mr Clent was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mr F. L. Witting will give a lecture on “How to Make Poultry Pay” at the next meeting to be held on October 12. EGG-LAYING CONTESTS. MASSEY COLLEGE (24th WEEK). Light Breed, singles (33 birds). R. M.
