KING’S HOLIDAY CRUISE

Informal Stay At Island BATHING IN BRIGHT SUNSHINE UNEXPECTED ARRIVAL AT TOWN (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Belgrade, August 13. Dressed in grey flannels and an opennecked blue shirt, the King yesterday watched fishermen at the island of Rab playing skittles. He was s.i interested that he joined in the game. Afterwards he struck a bargain and bought skittles. Later, attracted by a Yugoslavian sailor’s shirt, the King ente-ed a shop. Speaking German he asked to see one. The proprietress was so flustered that she gave him the wrong size. King smilingly held it up on his shoulders and indicated that it was too small. He bought one fitting him for a few shillings. The King spent the morning cruising and bathing in brilliant sunshine. Describing the unexpected arrival of King Edward in the little town of Novigrad, the Pravda says: “When he made a small purchase from a fisherman the man refused to accept any money, saying he would gladly give all, even his life, for the King. There was an amusing incident when another fisherman, who had been pointed out as knowing English, was invited by the King to enter a motor-boat. The fisherman complied, but soon landed again. He told the other fishermen, ‘A gentleman there wanted me to go on board the yacht. I could not do that, because the King of England is on board.’ ” The Pravda adds: “All Dalmatian seamen and fishermen seem to recognize the King as a real son of the sea, and they are overwhelmed with joy that he should forsake the fashionable beaches and busy seaports to spend a quiet holiday here.”
