TESTS OF BRIDGES
WEIGHT-CARRYING CAPACITY ASCERTAINED. (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, August 13. • In order to gain practical scientific data on the weight-carrying capacity of certain types of bridges which have been standing for many years, selected bridges, which have been scheduled for demolition, are being deliberatelybroken by overloading in the presence of officials of the Ministry of Transport and experts from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Building Research Station. The first experiment took place to-day near Derby and others will follow in Birmingham and Essex. An ingenious mechanism has been devised for recording the gradual distortion of bridges under strain up to breaking point.
