Bluff Notes

Mrs A. C. McKillop, Bradshaw street, was hostess at afternoon tea on Friday. Miss Gladys Urwin, Bandon street, left yesterday to spend a holiday at the Hermitage, Mount Cook. Mrs Stewart Ferguson, Tay street, Invercargill, paid a brief visit to relatives at the port during the week. Miss Lucy Carr, Wellington, who has been the guest of Mrs R. J. Hamilton, Bandon street, left on Thursday for Dunedin.

Mrs A. Waddell, Bann street, who has been spending a few days in Dunedin, leaves to-day to spend a holiday at the Hermitage, Mount Cook. She will be I accompanied by her niece, Miss Joan j Cuppies, of Dunedin. The members of the Bluff Musical Club met at the residence of Mrs G. E. Hicks, Burrows street, on Wednesday evening to bid farewell to one of its members, Mr W. E. Pickard, musical conductor, who leaves next week to take up a position in Timaru. A musical programme was contributed to by the following:—Songs, Misses Gladys Williams, E. Preston; Messrs G. E. Hicks and W. McDonald; vocal duet, Mrs Jack Walker and Master Jack Walker; saxophone solo, Mr Pickard. Concerted items were also given by the members. Several amusing competitions were held, the winners being Miss Dorothy Cahill, Mr Pickard and Mrs Jack Walker. During the evening opportunity was taken by the president of the club, Mr G. E. Hicks, to present Mr Pickard with a clock. In making the presentation, Mr Hicks stated that it carried with it the very best wishes of the members for happiness and success in his new position. Mention was also made of the fact that in losing Mr Pickard, the club was being deprived of one of its original and most talented members. Further tributes were paid by Mr H. Burr, Mrs Jack Walker, Mr E. Parsons and Mrs J. McQuarrie. Mr Pickard suitably responded. A pleasant function took place in St. Matthew’s Church of England Schoolroom on Thursday evening, when the Misses Olive Dixon and Florence Woods and Mr N. Carter, three members of the church choir, who are to be married next Wednesday, were the guests of honour at a social evening organized by their fellow choir members and the congregation of St. Matthew’s Church. Those present spent an enjoyable evening playing cards, and guessing the answers to the various competitions held. After the supper interval, the Rev. C. N. Luker, on behalf of the choir and congregation, asked the three guests of honour to accept several gifts as tokens of the esteem in which they were held by both the choir and members of the congregation. He also wished them happiness and prosperity in their married life. Mr E. A. Nichol, choir master, endorsed Mr Luker’s remarks. Mr N. Carter, Miss Woods’s fiance, thanked all present for the tea set and set of carvers that had been presented to them by the members of the choir and congregation. Mr W. Dixon responded on behalf of his daughter who was the recipient of a beaten brass fire screen.
