CENTRAL DEFEAT WESTERN. The first of the two matches played each year for the Mudge Shield presented for competition between Central and Western was decided at Tuatapere. Just before half-time Payne (Central) scored, making the score: Central 6, Western 3. In the second spell Western showed up better but Central prevented any tries. Later on Clark scored another try for Central, the kick just failing. Play was fairly slow for the rest of the game, although Chilton scored twice for Central, Shand converting both with very good kicks. Towards the end of the game Bulman (Western) goaled from a penalty, making the final score 19 —6 in favour of Central. Mr D. Collie (Tuatapere) was referee.
