WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED.
To the Editor. Sir,—A correspondent in yesterday’s issue draws attention to the unsatisfactory state of certain footpaths. A footnote from the County Council states that they have no funds to spend on these improvements. In this same issue appears a statement from Mr James Hargest, M.P., that there are 500 men in Invercargill receiving money for nothing. Why are these men not put on to do the much needed improvements all round this city? In almost all suburban streets and i’oads there are banks and holes and on all sides one sees much that needs improvement, both for looks and utility. Then from all over Southland comes the cry for labour on farms. Farmers of 70 years have been forced to take on team work on their farms because of the absolute impossibility to get young and capable men to do the work. Farmers require men for ditching and gorse worx, but advertise in vain. Yet 500, mostly ablebodied men, are loafing around town waiting for dole day. How is this going to be remedied?—Yours etc., NO WORK, NO PAY. Invercargill, July 21, 1936.
