DEMOCRATS “GO ONE BETTER”

DRAFT OF PLATFORM PROVISION FOR ANOTHER DEPRESSION (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.55 p.m.) Washington, June 14. Authoritative sources revealed today that the Democrats are drafting a second New Deal, designed “to go the Republicans’ platform one better.” The Democrats will pledge the Federal plan for public works, whereas the Republicans favour executing such undertakings on their individual merits. The plan would permit the immediate ( beginning of large-scale construction. In the event of another depression or other emergency the Democrat platform is to call for a “long-range” clearance of slums and to endorse the Administration’s farm, social security, stock market regulation and other operating programmes. Slum financing is not discussed, but a new bond issue considered. The President (Mr Franklin D. Roosevelt) addressed a plea for public support of the Administration’s economic and social programme to a gathering of 30,000 at the unveiling of a memorial to George Rogers Clark, the I revolutionary, at Vincennes (Indiana) . to-day. ’’ Mr Roosevelt’s speech, the third - major one in a tour extending from t Texas to Washington and ending tos morrow, resembled more a sermon on morality than a political exposition. 5 “Our modern civilization must con- - stantly protect itself against moral de1 fectives, whose objectives are the same but whose methods are more subtle than those of their prototypes 150 years 2 ago,” said the President. “We do not change from a free Government when we aim new weapons against the new 1 devices of crime and cupidity.”
