AMERICA’S BIG PAY DAY
“Baby Bonds” Paid To Veterans (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 9.15 p.m.) Washington, June 14. The biggest pay day in the Government’s history was to-day, when postmen delivered “baby bonds” aggregating 1,650,000,000 dollars (£330,000.000) to 3,000,000 Great War veterans. There were celebrations by Veterans' Associations throughout the United States to mark the greatest event of its kind in America’s history. The police are ready for the swift prosecution of confidence men and other “get-rich-quick” tale-spinners Armed National Guards are mobilized for any emergency. A wave of buying and its consequent trade “pickings” are expected. The windmill at Fontville in which Alphonse Daudet began to write his “Lettres de Mon Moulin” appears on a postage stamp for two francs, issued in France on April 27.
