DESCENT FROM EVEREST

Ruttledge Expedition (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) London, June 14. A copyright message from Mr Hugh Ruttledge (leader of the British Expedition which has abandoned its attempt to conquer Mount Everest). sent from the camp on the north face on Sunday night, says that Mr F. S. Smythe and Mr P. Wyn Harris have completed a valuable reconnaissance of the west side of North Col. The heavy snow covering Everest is driving the party from its present high camp, which is established at an altitude of 20,000 ft., and the climbers are descending to Camp One, at 18,000 ft. From there the party will make a detailed report of its conclusions when Lieutenant W. R. Smith-Wyndham (the chief wireless officer) has reopened the main wireless. A cable from Reuters Agency at Darjeeling states that the expedition is expected to return shortly.
