FOOTBALL

Association Code CORINTHIANS DEFEATS MATAURA

Corinthians and Southern were the winning teams in the Association football competition for the McDonald Cup on Saturday. The match on the Showgrounds between Corinthians and Mataura provided some clever and bright play, interspersed with dull periods. All round, however, it was quite a good exhibition, with Corinthians definitely superior throughout. At the South ground, Southern defeated Central by 2 goals to 0, but it did not have matters all its own way. The points in the senior competition are as follows:—

CORINTHIANS (8) v. MATAURA (3). Corinthians was too clever for Mataura, and won by eight goals to three. There were flashes of clever play by both sides, with some effective combination. The country team is light and fast, and is improving with every game. Corinthians showed signs of slacking early in the second half, but two goals by Mataura caused the Blues to smarten their play. The teams were:

Corinthians (blue). —English; M. O’Rorke, J. Morrison; Kerr, D. Morrison, Taylor; Gorrie, Reddington, John Morrison, Dymock, Pinkney. Mataura (white). —W. Jenkins; Russell, Campbell; Brownsey, Moylen, Billington; Hannah, M. Jenkins, Hardy, McKinnon, J. Jenkins. Corinthians attacked early, and it was not long before J. Morrison goaled a first-timer. Corinthians 1, Mataura 0. The Blues kept at it, and after some clever combined work by D. Morrison and Reddington the latter gave J. Morrison an opening, and he made no mistake. Corinthians 2, Mataura 0. The Mataura forwards showed speed when in possession, but O’Rorke and Pinkney were holding them. The game deteriorated a little, there being too much hard kicking, but from a melee John Morrison completed the hat-trick. Corinthians 3, Mataura 0. Hardy went away on his own for Mataura, but lacked support. He was doing a lot of work. Gorrie and Reddington were combining well, and a neat cross by the former found John Morrison again on the spot to beat Jenkins and score his fourth goal; an excellent performance. Corinthians 4, Mataura 0. Hardy again broke through for tire Whites, and tested English, but English cleared well. Back at the other end James Morrison swung in a long shot and the ball curled in just under the bar. Corinthians 5, Mataura 0. It was not long before the Blues Stdded another goal, Dymock dropping in a well-placed corner for Kerr to dash in, take the ball on the full and bang it past Jenkins. Corinthians 6, Mataura 0. _

The Whites made great efforts to score, and catching the Blues out of position, M. Jenkins drove a hot one into the net. Corinthians 6, Mataura 1. Resuming after the interval Gorrie made a run and crossed neatly for John Morrison to beat Jenkins for the fifth time. Corinthians 7, Mataura 1. Mataura took a turn on attack and O’Rorke, instead of clearing, let the ball go through to the goalkeeper—an unwise habit he has developed. M. Hardy cut in smartly, and gave English no chance. Corinthians 7, Mataura 2.

The Blues livened again, and a cross by Gorrie saw Reddington take the ball on the run and leave Jenkins standing with a fast drive. Corinthians 8, Mataura 2.

The Whites came again, and from a melee Hardy scored. Corinthians 8, Mataura 3.

Jenkins then brilliantly saved two shots by J. Morrison. The Blues were attacking at the end. Mr E. D. Dyer was the referee. SOUTHERN (2) v. CENTRAL (0). Southern and Central had an even game on the South ground, the former winning by two goals to nil.

The teams were: Southern (black) .—Hobbs, Morrison, Pay, Kerr, Dennis, Matheson, Stevens, McDonald, McPherson, Kelly and Thompson. Central (green).—W. Ferguson, Harvey, McDougall, Batchelor, E. Walsh, Stables, Warnock, Lee, R. Ferguson, E. O’Halloran and Collins. The first 10 minutes’ play was of an even nature, neither goalkeeper being seriously troubled. Kerr and Morrison (Southern) were a troublesome pair to Ferguson, and Batchelor had his work cut out to keep them in check. Central was playing a much improved game on the previous week’s display. Hobbs received a minor injury and left the field of play. Half-time sounded with no score. Southern 0, Central 0. Hobbs resumed in the second spell. The game continued to lack interest, the combination and finishing by both sides being poor. Hobbs was unfortunate when Matheson crossed a centre for the former to test Ferguson with a strong shot. Batchelor was playing a sound game at back, and relieved Ferguson of many anxieties. Collins and McDougall broke away, and the former’s shot was scrambled away by Pay. Hobbs sprinted away on the left and when nearing the goal passed to Morrison, who shot at goal. Ferguson went down to gather, but the pace of the ball carried the goalie’s hands over the line. Southern 1, Central 0. From the replay, E. Walsh made ground and his shot at goal just sailed over the bar. Back went play to Central’s goalmouth where Kerr tried a first timer which just rounded the post. McDougall was working hard at this stage and, in conjunction with Lee, was unfortunate in not equalizing, Pay on this occasion making an extraordinary save. From tricky work by Hobbs and Morrison the latter player again beat Ferguson with a carpet drive. Southern 2, Central 0. Shortly afterwards the whistle sounded for full time with play around Southern’s goalmouth. Southern 2, Central 0. Mr T. McMurdo was referee. JUNIOR GAMES. The junior game between Old Boys and Corinthians at the Showgrounds was won by Corinthians by 3 goals to nil. The scorers for the winners were Pinkney, L. Radka and Haggerty. Mr E. Crisp refereed. Playing at the South ground Central (3) defeated Rovers (nil). Stables, Murdoch and Young scored. Mr Ferguson refereed. BOYS’ BRIGADE. The Third Company was too good for the Fifth Company, and won by 6 goals to 1. The Second Company beat the Combined Company team by 4 goals to 1. IN OTHER CENTRES Dunedin.—Canterbury 6 v.
