WOMEN’S HOCKEY

COLLEGIATE BEATS UNION ONE GAME PLAYED

The weather, though cold, was fine on Saturday afternoon for the Southland Women’s Hockey Association’s competition. The only game played—that between Collegiate and Unionresulted in a win for Collegiate by 5 goals to nil. The teams were as follows:—

Collegiate—D. Shuttleworth, N. Bell; M. Smith, E. Belsham, J. Smith; Madge Mclntyre, I. Rewcastle, M. Thomas, D. Gray, P. Steans. Union—M. Marshall; V. Robb, A. Bateman; E. Ross, E. Darlison, E. Robb, F. Robinson, M. Lay, D. Mulvey, P. Hall, Mrs Malloy. The first spell was fairly evenly contested, though Collegiate held the territorial advantage almost throughout. Poor shooting on the part of the forwards, sound defensive work by V. Robb, and smart goalkeeping by M. Marshall between the Union posts kept the score down to one-nil in favour of Collegiate. E. Darlison put Union on attack at the commencement, and Mrs Malloy gained ground, but delayed her centreing hit too long and N. Bell cleared. The Collegiate forwards became aggressive, but their circle work was disappointing, and the halves were standing too deep. A good solid run by M. Thomas took her right to the goalmouth, but M. Marshall saved at the expense of a comer. D. Mulvey showed up at the head of a Union attack, only to be sent back by M. Smith, who played a sound defensive game right through. Collegiate swung back to the attack, and did everything but score. The Union goalie saved repeatedly, but the attackers lost opportunities through bad shooting. N. Bell and D. Shuttleworth—Collegiate was without a goalkeeper—had plenty to do to stem a Union rush, in which F. Robinson and D. Mulvey were prominent. Union looked like scoring, but N. Bell finally saved at the expense of a comer. Collegiate attacked again, and from a scramble near the goalmouth I. Rewcastle scored. Collegiate 1, Union 0. A Stem Contest. For the first 15 minutes after halftime, the game was sternly contested, each side attacking in turn. I. Rewcastle carried the ball through on her own to find the net. Collegiate 2, Union 0.

D. Mulvey then had to leave the field and Collegiate, finding some of its opponents tiring, began to dominate the play. D. Gray, whose play had been disappointing, infused more life into her efforts and she goaled twice in quick succession. Collegiate 4, Union 0. P. Steans showed up in aggressive work on the Collegiate right wing and a smart centre by her was picked up by I. Rewcastle, who goaled. D. Gray nearly scored again shortly afterwards, but E. Robb cleared. Play was in midfield when time was sounded five minutes later. Mr J. D. Gregg was the referee.
