COSTLY TELEPHONE CALLS
MAID-SERVANT’S IGNORANCE. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, May 22. A resident of Northwood who recently took a holiday, leaving his house in charge of his servants, returned to find a telephone bill for over £lOO, which was indignantly repudiated.
The Post Office replied that two halfhour calls to Australia were responsible, after which the householder learned that a maid-servant had telephoned a young man in Australia, on the assumption that calls after 7 p.m. were 1/- anywhere.
