SOUTHLAND FORECAST. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, February U. The following is the Dominion Observatory’s special weather forecast for Southland: — Strong to south-west winds of gale force at times. Weather cold and changeable and showery, with hail in parts of the coast. Seas rough. The following is the report for the Dominion. Weather unsettled in districts with a westerly aspect and the far south with rain in many places and some heavy falls in Westland. Fair at first ’in eastern areas, but later clouding over and scattered showers developing. Temperatures becoming cooler to-morrow. A series of westerly depressions is crossing New Zealand. An anticyclone is located to the north and another one extends across the Great Australian Bight onto south-eastern Australia. Winds.—Moderate to strong northerly to westerly winds of gale force at places in and south of Cook Strait, backing later to southwesterlies. Seas (New Zealand waters). —Becoming rough south of Cape Egmont and about Cook and Foveaux Strait. Elsewhere slight to moderate, but rising offshore south of Castlepoint. Eastern Tasman Sea.—Westerly to .southwesterly winds. Moderate in the northern portion with moderate seas. Strong to gale force in the southern portion with rough seas. The weather in Invercargill yesterday was stormy. A strong westerly wind blew and showers of rain fell at intervals. At one o’clock this morning there was practically no change in the weather. The barometer readings at one o’clock for the past three mornings have been as follows:— This morning (rising) 29.45 in. Yesterday 29.60 in. Monday 29.70 in.
