TE TUA NOTES
LAWN TENNIS. (From Our Correspondent.) The Te Tua tennis team travelled to Papatotara on Wednesday afternoon, to play the local team there. The Te Tua team was very fortunate to win by the narrow margin of four games—the score being eight sets to each team and 69 games to 65 in favour of Te Tua. The following are the results of the various matches —Te Tua players being mentioned first: — Men’s singles.—G. Porter 6 v. S. Young 2; R. Knowler 6 v. I. Buchanan' 1; C. Knowler 6 v. R. Baker 4; B. Gift Evening. About 60 young people from the surrounding districts entertained Miss Annie McKay at a gift evening in the school on Wednesday evening. Games and dancing occupied the evening and at a suitable interval Mr G. Porter felicitated Miss McKay on her approaching marriage and expressed the regret felt in the district at her impending departure to the West Coast. He then called upon Miss McKay to accept the many beautiful gifts which spoke in themselves of the high esteem in which she was held. Miss Dorrie Knowler on behalf of the Basketball Club presented Miss McKay with a hearth rug and briefly referred to her excellent work as captain of the team since the commencement of the club. Miss McKay suitably responded. Those present were: Mr and Mrs D. McKay, Mr and Mrs Hardy (Tuatapere), Mesdames Sutherland, Erskine (Papatotara), McKenzie, Misses Annie McKay, Betty McKay, Knowler (5), Hudson, Sheehan, Whyte, Horrell (5), O’Brien (2), Rogers (Tuatapere), Evans, McKerchar, Weir, Messrs Porter, Aiderson (2), McKay (2), Sheehan (2), Fairbairn, Knowler (2), Mitchell, Horrell (3), Daley, McKerchar-, Hudson etc. Surprise Party. One of the most popular surprise parties of the season was held in the school on Monday evening in honour of Mr Gilbert Porter. Outdoor games were played till dark and indoor games, competitions and
dancing occupied the remainder of .the evening. A treasure hunt was won by Mr Reg. Alderson, and a “personalities” competition was won by Mr H.- Mitchell. At the conclusion of supper Mr R. Knowler spoke in appreciative terms of Mr Porter’s fine work in the district and musical honours were heartily accorded the guest of the evening. Mr Porter replied briefly and the singing of Auld Lang Syne brought to a conclusion a very jolly evening. Those present were: Mr and Mrs Gieseg, Misses McKay (2), Knowler (3), Horrell (5), Weir, Messrs Porter, Hewitt, Knowler (2), Mitchell, McKay (2), Daley, and Horrell (4).
