SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION SUMMER SHOW MATTERS At the monthly meeting yesterday afternoon of the directors of the Southland A. and P. Association Mr John Macdonald presided over Messrs J. Milne, A. S. Holms, H. Carswell, J. C. Gardner, R. Kennedy, L. Gilkison, A. Campbell, G. S. Young, W. Clark, R. Swale, S. T. Evans, T. E. Paterson, J. Gilkison, W. Roxburgh, T. Hamilton, W. Falconer, J, Marshall and Dr Ritchie Crawford. Mr Hamilton and Dr Crawford were appointed to superintend the gate control operations. Mr A. L. Adamson, the secretary, said that preparations for the Summer Show to be held next month were well in hand. The grounds were in good order, the grass having been well eaten down by sheep. Holding paddocks for cattle and sheep were provided for in sufficient numbers, while the usual provision was being made for green feed and straw. The programme of evening entertainment had been completed and published. The grounds committee reported that it had met to give consideration to the erection of a shed to house the association’s property. It was decided finally to defer the matter till next year when it was planned to erect additional horse boxes. The report of the committee was adopted. The secretary said that at the combined breeders’ sale an increased entry had been received. The sale had been conducted in a thorough manner, and aided by fine weather was put through in good time. He suggested that at future sales valuable time could be saved if the reading of pedigrees was abolished. It was decided to discuss the secretary’s suggestion with the representatives of the various firms. The secretary also reported that .in the ewe hogget competition held during the month only 10 entries had been received. The judges were Messrs P. Campbell and J. J- McCrostie. It was distressing to see so few entries, he said. In 1933 29 entries had been received while last year 14 entries had come to hand. Awards were made as follows: W. J. Cowie 1, J. Macpherson 2, J. A. Taylor 3, W. J. Clark 4. _ Mr John Ewan recommended that provision be made for a “bred by exhibitor class. It was resolved that the judges be written to in connection with Mr Ewan’s suggestion. The J. B. Ford Co. (N.Z.) Ltd., wrote stating that the company would be pleased to donate to the association .a silver gilt trophy standing approximately 26 inches high for a cheese grading competition to be held annually at. the May show. The competition would be open to the Factory Managers’ Association of Otago and Southland and the Factory Assistants Association of Otago and Southland. The trophy would have to be won by the same person three times before it became his absolute property, but these wins need not be in succession. It was decided that the trophy be accepted and the donors thanked.
