CHARGE FOR WATER
EDUCATION BOARD. REDUCTION SOUGHT. From time to time the Southland Education Board has made representations to the City Council for reductions in the charge for water at city schools. At last evening’s meeting of the council the Works Committee reported having received a letter from the Southland Education Board requesting the council to grant some relief to town schools in connection with the water and sanitary charges. The school committees’ accqunts during the twelve months ended February 28, 1935, revealed the following position: —
The following was the report of the City Engineer on the subject: “This matter has come up at intervals for years. The principal trouble is excessive waste. In all cases which I have investigated I have found great waste. The council reduced the rate per 1000 gallons to 9d as from July 30, 1929 (ordinary rate Jd net). In Auckland a free supply of 500 gallons a year per child is allowed, after which all supply is charged at normal rate of lOd. In Hamilton the charge is 9d with no free supply. In Wellington apparently a normal rate is charged. Any reduction in charge below 9d would amount to a gift. As waste is so high it may be as well to keep the charge high so that some more notice is taken by the committees of the waste.” The committee’s recommendation that the Southland Education Board be informed that the council could not see its way clear to grant any further reduction in the charges was carried.
