Mr Justice Kennedy arrived in Invercargill by yesterday afternoon’s express. He presides at the Supreme Court Sessions commencing to-day. Miss Ethel McKee, at present on the relieving staff of the Southland. Education Board, has received notice of her appointment as assistant mistress at the Waimatua School. Messrs E. Healey (Sydney), F. G. Hodson (Wellington), J. Mackenzie (Walter Peak), P. C. Agar. G. W. MacAvoy, C. H. Jacobs, J. C. Hinton and J. A. Roberts, all of Dunedin, are at the Grand Hotel. The Revs. J. Chisholm and J. H. Thomson left en route to Wellington by the express yesterday afternoon to attend the meeting of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Mr W. F. Haworth, M.A., of the Ohura District High School, was appointed at yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Southland High Schools’ Board to a position as assistant master at the Boys’ School. Messrs D. A. Carty (Wellington), E. P. Fraser (Wellington), W. Fraser (Wellington), D. Burgess (Christchurch), H. P. Desmoulins, F. Pearce, J. H. Skipworth, C. Gunn and J. Dunn, all of Dunedin, are at the Club Hotel.

A Wellington Press Association telegram reports the death of Mr F. H. Bakeweil, Chief Inspector of Schools from 1917 to 1924. He was the father of Dr. Helen Bakewell, Dr. A. H. Bakewell, of Christchurch, and Dr. R. A. Bakeweil, of Petone. Mr James R. Lockie, assistant solicitor to the Wellington City Council, who left on a holiday visit to England about six months ago, has forwarded his resignation to the City Council. He has accepted the position of deputy clerk to Ayrshire County, Scotland, at a salary of £lOOO a year. Reference to the death of Mr A. A. Mac Gibbon was made at last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council by the Mayor (Mr A. T. Newman) and a motion of condolence was passed. The Mayor said that Mr Mac Gibbon had been ’closely associated with the borough for 15 years and had. given many years of valuable service as councillor and Mayor. Many progressive measures had been undertaken during his term of office.

Colonel J. J. Sleeman, Chief Commissioner for the St. John Ambulance Brigade Overseas at St. John’s Gate, who is to visit Australia and New Zealand, will arrive in the Dominion on the first steamer connecting with the steamer Hector, which reaches Sydney on January 2. Colonel Sleeman will leave New Zealand again on or about February 7, and during his tour of the Dominion will carry out inspections of the brigade.
