“REPUDIATION.”
To the Editor.
Sir, —It is impossible to take part in all the controversies in the correspondence columns of our papers at the present time, but my attention has been drawn to a letter of “D.G.8.” in the Times. . “D.G.8.” tells us that he is “ashamed of being called a farmer” because “the spirit of self-reliance of the pioneers is passing away when farmers are talking of repudiating their just debts, etc.” If “D.G.8.” would only pause and think he would realize—that 99 per cent, of the farmers of to-day are not repudiators—that many sacrifices are being made to-day by the farmer and his family to meet his monetary commitments and that the “debts” he is forced to “repudiate” are not “just debts” at all and further that, under a sane monetary system there would be very little need to “repudiate” and plenty for all. The subject is too big even for several columns of your paper but I am prepared to take the nlatform anywhere in Southland, even during the hurly-burly of election time in support of the above statement and to show that my contention is supported by some of the best brains of the world to-day. I do not know “D.G.8.” but my identity is well known so I will use my old signature.—l am, etc., B.C.
