HIGH SCHOOLS

SIEETING OF BOARD. LADY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. At the meeting of the Southland High Schools’ Board held yesterday afternoon, Mr R. M. Strang presided over Messrs J. T. Carswell, F. G. Stevenson and John Gilkison. Messrs Stevenson and Carswell were appointed a visiting committee, i It was decided that the boardf confer with the lady principal and ttfe rector in connection with dates. _ _ ... The resignation of Mr W. S. Allan, an assistant master at the boys’ school, was accepted with regret. It was decided to send a letter to Mr Allan expressing the appreciation of the board for his services. The report submitted by the rector, Dr. G. H. Uttley, stated that the roll number of the Boys’ High School was the same as last month. Next year woodwork classes would be held at the school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays during the whole of the afternoon. “I suggest that the school close for the year on Wednesday, December 18, and that the closing function be held in the afternoon at 2.30. A speaker for the afternoon will have to be chosen soon,” the report concluded. The report was adopted. The lady principal, Miss H. Eastwood, wrote as follows:—“The board is probably aware that under existing conditions it is almost impossible for teachers to obtain positions in schools other than the one whose staff they first join. This often leads to weakness and the scheme whereby a teacher may widen her experience and so increase her usefulness by exchange with a mistress in another school is one worthy of support within limits. I therefore recommend to the favourable consideration of the board the request of Miss A. Shallcrass to exchange for 1936 with Miss P. J. Sutton, B.Sc., of the Otago Girls’ High School. Miss Sutton is a former pupil of this school.” 1 The exchange was agreed to. The Education Department wrote as follows:—“The Unemployment _ Board will favourably consider applications for subsidies from controlling authorities of secondary and technical schools in respect of the construction of assembly halls, gymnasia, etc., where funds have been raised by or through these bodies and where the buildings become public property. The Unemployment Board’s subsidy in these cases will not exceed 33 1-3 per cent, of the total cost of construction, the controlling authority. to find the balance of the finance. The work in each case must be put in hand by December 31 next.”

The lady principal’s report stated:— “The annual athletic sports held on October 9 were, except for an unpleasant wind, an unqualified success. The entries were numerous and the girls enjoyed the day thoroughly. The Government school savings bank scheme, instituted in the primary schools some time ago, has now been linked up with the first year pupils of secondary schools. The departmental inspectors, Miss Hetherington and Mr Caradus, visited the school in connection with the award of senior free places and grading of teachers. I should be glad if the board would consider making a grant to the library to enable me to buy a children’s encyclopedia, price 12 guineas. The only set of such books in the library is now out of date.” The report was adopted, and it was decided to authorize the purchase of the encyclopedia.
