FIJI’S FINANCES
SUBSTANTIAL SURPLUS. REDUCTION IN TAXATION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Suva, November 2. The Legislative Council was opened this morning by the Governor, who in his address said the surplus for 1935 was £41,622 and the accumulated surplus £552,787. Reductions in the taxation forecast were:
Beer, bottled: 4/- preferential and 6/- genera], reduced to 2/6 and 4/6.
Beer in casks: 3/- preferential and 5/- general, reduced to 2/- and 4/-. Meat: 2d preferential and 3d general, reduced io Id and 2d. Fish: 20 per cent, preferential and 40 per cent, general, reduced to 10 and 30 per cent. The Governor also forecast the abolition of the export taxes on trocus shell and bcche-de-mer and a reduction of the native tax from £16,000 to £lO,OOO. A new mining Bill is being introduced.
