HEAVY DEFEAT
WOMEN’S TENNIS TEAM NEW SOUTH WALES WIN RUBBER NEW ZEALANDERS OUTCLASSED (United Press Assn—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 7.20 p.m.) Sydney, November 3. The women’s lawn tennis match New South Vj/ales v. New Zealand was continued in very hot sultry weather. The results were: Singles. Miss Menzies (N.S.W.) defeated Miss E. Rudkin (N.Z.) 6—2, 6—2. Miss Selwin (N.S.W.) defeated Miss T. Poole 6—2, 6—o. Miss Coyne (N.S.W.) defeated Miss D. Nicholls (N.Z.) 6—o, 6—l. Miss Hattersley (N.S.W.) defeated Miss D. Miller (N.Z.) 6—3, 6—2. Miss Menzies was too sure for. Miss Rudkin. The former’s only' failures were at the net. Miss Thelma Poole played versatile tennis and took all the risks, but made far too many mistakes against her consistent opponent, Miss Selwin. Miss Coyne played with the utmost confidence against her New Zealand opponent, Miss Nicholls, who failed to do herself justice. Apparently she was distressed by the heat. Miss Miller began well against Miss Hattersley and in fact offered stronger opposition than her team mates. Miss Hattersley drove very hard and played brilliantly at the net. She never let up. The doubles resulted:
Misses Coyne and Vickery (N.S.W.) defeated Misses Nicholls and Rudkin 6—3, 6—l. Misses Hattersley and Selwin defeated Misses T. and I. Poole 6 —3, 6—l.
New South Wales thus won by 12 rubbers, 26 sets 123 games, to 1 set, 63 games.
Miss T. Poole displayed ability and skill in the doubles, scoring several times with well judged interceptions. In the other match Miss Coyne was overpowering with her services, drives and smashes.
The visitors showed they were inexperienced on grass and frequently mishit the ball. Nevertheless the local players were never fully extended.
