SAUCE FOR THE GOOSE.
To the Editor. Sir, —When the Labour Party opposed Mr Hislop in Wellington at the Mayoral elections they condemned his municipal policy as vigorously as they now condemn the Government policy. Mr Hislop pointed to the careful handling of city finance and how well he and his supporting councillors had steered the City so far. He most emphatically warned the citizens of the danger of swopping horses in the middle of the river and stressed the advisability of giving him a majority to complete his plan for rehabilitation. The position is now reversed. The Government has steered the ship of State safely through the depression, and times are improving, our budget is balanced and public debt decreased. The Prime Minister, as did Mr Hislop, asks the electors to let this safe policy have a chance ,to work itself out and warns them not to swop horses till the river is crossed.
Sauce of Mr Hislop’s goose is apparently not sauce for Mr Forbes’s gander! We see the former now stumping the country urging electors to swop horses in the middle of the stream as the best course, reverse the non-borrowing policy for a big borrowing campaign, unbalance the Budget by less revenue and more expenditure. In short he now argues that our only hope is to undo all that the Government has done.
This is the very reverse of his advice to the citizens of Wellington when he was standing for office! Does this mean that his access to office is the factor which governs his policy—rather than the good of the country? lam etc., PETER SIMPLE.”
