GERMAN JEWS

THE NAZI PROGRAMME MEASURES TO PREVENT VICTIMIZATION GOVERNMENT’S POLICY (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Berlin, August 18. A message from Unigsberg states that Dr Schacht, in opening the East German fair, attacked Herr Streicher’s Jew-baiting methods, and declared that the Nazi programme, while debarring Jews from comradeship and citizenship, admitted them to the operation of laws which were now being framed and under which Jews could not be arbitrarily victimized. This also applied to the religious question. Germany stood midway in the greatest task in her history. Whoever interfered with the Government’s policy did a dangerous thing. Priests must not intermingle -with politics, and Jews must reajize that they were no longer in a dominant state. Leadership, not individual action, must solve these problems. The people’s savings were safe, but rigorous economy must be exercised. ORTHODOX CHURCH ALLEGED PERSECUTION. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) London, August 17. Friends of the German Orthodox community have appealed to the Archbishop of Canterbury on behalf of the Orthodox Metropolitan (Dr Schmucker), Herr Haeberle, and another member of the church, alleging that the German Government, despite assurances, was still persecuting the Orthodox Church. Dr Schmucker was arrested in 1933 and taken to the Wurtemburg concentration camp, where he was kicked, ill-treated, and forced to work in freezing weather clad only in trousers and a shirt, necessitating his going to bed for months after his release. Herr Haeberle was also ill-treated. Both subsequently sued the commander of the camp for damages, whereupon they were again arrested, and were still imprisoned. Their condition was now critical.
