BOOKMAKERS FINED

MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT.

(Per United Press Association.)

Whangarei, August 19. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day Charles Schon and Arthur Lambess were each fined £75 for permitting their premises to be used as common gaming houses. Each was given 14 days in which to pay the fine. The Magistrate, Mr Morris, when inflicting the fines said: “I am here to stop the practice, however impossible that may seem. If a man is foolish enough to go on bookmaking after having been heavily fined his fine will be increased every time he appears until it stops.”
