Sir Stanley Jackson, chairman of the Test Selection Committee, told the News-Chronicle that the suggestion that Wyatt’s decision to put the South Africans in first was dictated was nonsense. “He may have consulted experienced players, but the ultimate decision, which required much courage, was his alone,” he said. “I think, however, that the South Africans must have welcomed the decision as a gift from Heaven.”
