THE CITY POUND

REMOVAL PROPOSED. EAST END SITE. As a result of a resolution carried at last evening’s meeting of the City Council the city pound will be removed further out of town to a site at the cemetery reserve. Referring to the site for the pound, the Reserves Committee reported that at the request of the council the committee further considered the establishment of a pound on the town belt, Annan and Ettrick streets: The committee had under consideration a suitable site on the leasehold section occupied by Mr T. A. Maloney at the cemetery reserve. East Road. The matter had been left in the hands of the chairman of the committee and the superintendent to investigate and report to the council. The Superintendent of Reserves (Mr B. P. Mansfield) also reported: “On Tuesday afternoon last, accompanied by Councillor A. W. Jones, I called on Mr Maloney and ascertained that he is willing to accept the position of poundkeeper at a fee of £lO per annum, plus charges for any wandering stock which may, from time to time throughout, the year, be impounded. The site selected fulfils, so far as possible, the greatest number of requirements, equidistant from South and East Invercargill. It is easily reached via the East Road, Oteramika Road, Boundary Road, Herbert Street and Racecourse Road; further, it will not only serve the immediate requirements of the city, but also meet all demands for some years to come, being situated in a locality which is most rapidly growing. The notice board could be erected on this property, in a position immediately east of the residence and in full view from East Road. The pens, however, might be erected in a position several chains from the road frontage and thus out of sight of passers-by. I would suggest that, if approved, the present pound-keeper be advised of the council’s decision and that the present arrangements terminate on September 30 next, which is the end of the halfyearly period.” The Mayor (Mr John Miller): It would be a serious thing to shift the pound out to the East Road. You see what the sanitary inspector has to say about it.

Councillor A. W. Jones: The sanitary inspector makes no reference to it whatever, so don’t try to drag red herrings across the trail. Later Councillor Jones said that the Reserves Committee had given the matter very full consideration. It was a forward move and was overdue. Councillor W. M. C. Denham: I talked the matter over with the inspector and he was very much opposed to the alteration.

The Mayor: Yes, it would take far longer to drive cattle out there. Councillor G. J. Reed: We ought to get the pound out of the way, but we also ought to give consideration to the inspector’s views.

After some further discussion the recommendation was adopted.
