Bright batting was a feature of the South Africans’ and Gloucester’s innings. Dalton is the sixth South African to complete 1000 runs. Viljoen batted for 190 minutes and hit 15 fours. Barnett hit 46 out of 54 in half an hour. Hammond, batting for 132 minutes, hit 16 fours. It was reminiscent of the time when he was in form, causing bright hopes for the Test.
