MURDER AND SUICIDE

STREET SHOOTING AFFAIR. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 8.20 p.m.) Sydney, August 13. After an inquiry to-day the Coroner found that Peter Kopeivsky, aged 58, murdered Mrs Andrews, aged 25, then committed suicide. The Coroner said it would seem that Kopeivsky had been carrying on with Mrs Andrews, who was separated from her husband, and that Kopeivsky had given her considerable sums of money for two or three years. The Coroner paid a tribute to Frederick Hume’s courage. Sensational shooting in broad daylight, witnessed bv a motorist, occurred in Victoria Road, Gladesville. a suburb of Sydney, on August 2. Mary Emmaline Andrews, a wardsmaid employed at the Gladesville mental asylum, was shot dead by Peter Kopeivsky. married, aged 58. a wharf labourer, who afterwards committed suicide with a revolver. Frederick Hume told the police he was driving his car near the scene and observed Kopeivsky speak to Mrs Andrews, who was about to go on duty at the neighbouring asylum. He then saw Mrs Andrews rush across the road. Kopeivsky followed and fired three shots. Hume swung his car and tried to run down Kopeivsky after the first shot was fired. Kopeivsky. however, eluded him and the woman fell dead after the second shot. Kopeivsky shot himself before Hume could reach him. A woman acquaintance of Mrs Andrews told the police that Kopeivsky. who was a Russian, was infatuated with Mrs Andrews and had tried to find her the night before.
