LUMSDEN NOTES

TOWN BOARD MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Lumsden Town Board was held on Monday when the chairman, Mr A. Heath, presided. The Works Committee reported on the visit to Folia street where flooding had occurred. It was recommended that several property owners be requested to clean out ditches on their sections to allow the water to get away. The recommendation was adopted. The committee also advised that the contractor had carted 1000 yards of gravel as specified. It was decided that a further 300 yards be. purchased. The clerk advised that the sum of £1 3/- was in hand from last Arbor Dayi It was decided, subject to the consent of the Arbor Day Committee, to donate this sum towards the upkeep of the railway garden. It was decided also to make no further grant for this particular area during the current financial year. The matter of Town Board offices and meeting room was brought up. Commissioners were of the opinion that the time for erecting a suitable building was now opportune, while the Unemployment Board’s subsidy was available. After full discussion it was agreed that plans be drawn up and an estimate of the cost be submitted to the next meeting of the board. The chairman referred to the death of the late Mr Thomas Menzies, who was one of the oldest residents. He moved a motion of sympathy with the relatives. The winners of last week’s flag match were Miss Maxwell and R. Robertson. The first qualifying round for the championship will be played on August 24. Northern Sub-Union.

The final meeting of the Northern District Sub-Union was held on Thursday when the president. Mr W. Johnson presided. Arrangements were made to play the Black and White Cups matches on Saturday, August 24, when Lumsden would meet Balfour at Lumsden. The final will be played between the winners and Country Pirates on the following Saturday at Balfour. It was agreed to play the Rose Cup match on September 7 between the runners-up of the Black and White Caps’ games. It was decided to donate the sum of £1 10/- towards the expenses of the school representative team. Delegates expressed disappointment at the decision of the Southland Union to abandon the Fleming Cup match, and the president and secretary were appointed to draft" a letter to the Southland Union accordingly. Mr G. Soper was appointed manager of the Northern team for the Stewart Cup match at Dipton on Sat•urday. *
