GROCERY MANAGERS

STATUS QUESTIONED.

ARGUMENT IN COURT.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, August 12.

Whether grocery shop managers in Canterbux-y are bound by the award covering other employees in the trade was the principal topic in the hearing of a dispute in the Arbitration Court to-day. Decision was reserved. The applicant was the Canterbury MastexGrocers’ Industrial Union of Employers and its claims • were contested by the Canterbury Grocers’ Assistants’ Industrial Union of Workers.

The Employers’ Union claimed that there was a valid separate agreement with branch managers. This contention was opposed by the workers’ union.

The recently formed Canterbury Chain Stores Grocery Managers’ Union made a submission that managers were “occupiers” of shops and therefore should not be included in an award covering assistants.
