Mrs A. Provan, Havelock Street, is visiting friends at Winton.

On Thursday evening a euchre tournament was held in Gummies Bush Hall, in aid of the country princess and was largely attended, over 80 being present. Mrs J. Winton and Mr J. McKay were the highest scorers. Supper provided by the lady supporters of the Country Princess was greatly appreciated.

Miss Bain left last week for Christchurch and will be present at the National meeting. Nurse Haslemore, of the Wallace Hospital, who has been on annual leave, has returned and resumed duty A card evening was held in MacDougall’s tea rooms on Thursday evening in aid of the Sports Princess of the League carnival. There were 13 tables of bridge and three of euchre The highest score for bridge was made by Mr A. Dooley; Miss Wilkinson secured the hidden number, and Mrs E. S. Fossey the consolation prize. The prizes foi' euchre went to Mrs F. Hopwood and Mrs John Cassels. A delightful supper was provided by the committee. Mrs B. Hill, Havelock street, is holidaying in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs E. Spencer were welcomed home in Fleck’s Hall by a large number of friends on Thursday evening. The time was taken up with dancing and musical items. At a suitable interval supper was served. At the conclusion of the proceedings Mr Spencer thanked those present for their attendance, the ladies who provided the refreshments and Mr A. Perkins for supplying the music. Mrs G. W. Smith was the winner of the medal played under the auspices of the Golf Club last week.

A most enjoyable time was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs J. Fitzpatrick, South Riverton, when an evening was held in aid of the Presbytery building fund in connection with St. Columba’s church. There were over 60 present and the time was spent in cards and competitions. The euchre prizes were won by Miss T. Cprkery (Thornbury) and Father Fenelon, while Mr T. Stanley accounted for the competition prize. At the Rocks Reading Circle meeting last Thursday, the play “Father Against Son” by James Wilson was read by the following: Mesdames Black, Borland, Hankin, A. Parkin, and Thornhill, and Miss Meek. Extracts from “The Old Curiosity Shop” by Dickens, were also read. Rowing Club Ball. The annual ball of the Riverton Rowing Club, held in the Empire Theatre on Tuesday evening was a great social and financial success. There were over 300 couples present. The building was artistically decorated for the occasion, the club’s colours — green and white—predominating. All parts of the district were represented, while the Invercargill and Bluff clubs also sent representatives. The music was supplied by the 4YA orchestra, Dunedin. Mrs Cameron and Mis? MeKay played extras. Messrs Dickson were Masters of Ceremonies. The door takings amounted to £6O, and the function will result in a handsome profit.
