Mrs J. S. Dickie, Waipahi, left last week for Auckland on a visit to her parents, Mr and Mrs J. R. Foreman, Takapuna. Miss F. A. Smith, Dunedin, was the guest of Mrs F. S. Graham, Albany street, during the week-end. Mrs A. T. Pettigrew, Ardwick street, entertained at bridge on Wednesday afternoon of last week.

Mrs F. Wallis, Crewe street, has returned from Christchurch. Mrs F. V. Piper, Albany street, returns this evening from Lake Tekapo. Mr and Mrs S. Clark, Green Island, are spending a holiday with relatives in Gore.

At the meeting of the Arts and Crafts Circle of the Women’s Club last Tuesday afternoon, Miss L. Reinke gave a practical demonstration on wool embroidery and rug-making. On behalf of those present, Mrs H. C. MacGibbon, acting chairwoman, thanked Miss Reinke for her interesting demonstration. Mrs C. M. Wilson, president of the Gore Women’s Institute, left on Saturday morning to attend the annual conference of the Dominion Federation of Women’s Institutes which takes place this week at Auckland. Other delegates from Eastern Southland who left last week were Mesdames F. Smith (Waimumu), T. Campbell (Riversdale), B. Ostlund (Mandeville), McKenzie (Waikaka), J. Copland (Kaiwera), A. G. Copland (Waimumu), and F. Gutschlag (Eastern Southland Federation). ~ . A three act play, Sixteen, by Aimee and Philip Stuart was read at the July meeting of the Play Reading Circle of the Women’s Club on Monday evening of last week. The following was the cast: “Jennifer Lawrence,” Mrs D. Harvey; “Irene Lawrence,” Mrs Maurice Cronin; “Baba Lawrence,” Mrs R. G. Stokes; “Mrs McNeil,” Mrs H. A. Price; “Mrs Queen,” Mrs J. W. Turnbull; Sir John Corbet,” Miss Ruth Blaikie; “Dr Sloane,” Mrs Cyprian E. Webb; Chorus, Miss I. Sutherland. A successful social evening arranged by the committee of the tea rooms for the forthcoming Anglican Fair was held in the Cosy Lounge on Monday evening of last week. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames W. Symons, E. Proctor, J. Wingham and Hall. Items were given by Mrs Lionel Graham, Misses Symons and N. Parsons and Mr R. L. Stevenson (songs) and Miss Olga Fryer (violin solo). A singing competition was conducted by Mr W. D. Shelton and Miss M. Johnstone and Miss W. Gresham played the accompaniments. Music for dancing was provided by Mrs Wingham, Miss Tretheway and R. Bacon and Mr H. Horrell W The l Gore High School Ex-Pupils’ Association held their annual banquet m the Cosy Lounge last Wednesday evening Mr W. Chatterton presiding over an excellent attendance of members. Items were rendered during the evening by Misses E. and F. Hinchey (vocal duet) and Miss Margaret Boult (pianoforte solo). The latter part of the evening was spent in dancing. Fisher were hostesses at a most enjoyable gift party in aid of the Anglican spring fair last Friday afternoon at the Women’s Club Pretty bowls of mauve coloured dwarf irises and French marigolds decorated the lounge and during the afternoon items were contributed by Mrs J. A.. Edwards and Miss W. Gresham (pianoforte duet), Miss Olga Fryer (violin solo), and Miss Douglas Nicol (pianoforte solo). An entertaining one-act play, “The New Word” by Sir James M. Barrie was read with the following cast, “Mrs Torrence,” Mrs H. C. MacGibbon, ‘Mr Torrence,” Mrs Cyprian E. Webb, “Roger,” Mrs R. G. Stokes; “Emma,” Miss Douglas Nicol. Mrs E. Jordan, who leaves this week to take up residence in Dunedin, was entertained by members of the Gore Croquet Club last Thursday afternoon in the Cosy Lounge. During the afternoon items were contributed by Mrs A. T. Pettigrew (songs) and Mrs Maurice Cronin (recitations). A competition was won by Mrs P. Mallon and on behalf of those present, the president of the club, Mrs A. B. Caverhill, presented the guest of honour with a crystal vase. Apologies were received from Mrs R. J. Telfer and Mrs R. P. A large and appreciative audience greeted the members of the playreading circle of the Southland Women’s Club on Friday evening last when they presented the historical play “Clive of India” by W. P. Lipscombe and R. J. Minney, to the members of the Women’s Club here. Mrs R. G. Stokes, chairwoman of the Gore circle welcomed the visitors and later on behalf of those present expressed appreciation of the very fine reading they had given. Mrs C. E. Watts replied, returning thanks for the welcome and hospitality the members of her club had received. As an introduction to the play, Mrs L. B. Hutton, read an interesting sketch of the life of Robert Clive and the authors of the play. Those reading were Mesdames R. S. Mclnnes, A. M. Macdonald, Ritchie Crawford, J. N. Armour, T. F. Gilkison, J. G. Macdonald, C. E. Watts, L. B. Hutton, Misses McLeod and M. Thomson. Other Invercargill visitors were Mesdames Owen-Johnston, F. O. Mac Gibbon, Roy Anderson, C. C.
