THE NIAGARA
TEN DAYS FOR REPAIRS RAILING AND PLATES DAMAGED MR LYONS SAILING ON MARIPOSA (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Victoria (8.C.), July 18. As it will require ten days to repair the Niagara, the Australian Prime Minister, Mr Lyons, will take a steamer to Seattle to-day, thence proceed to San Francisco by railway and connect with the Mariposa, which is sailing on Tuesday. Twenty of the Niagara s passengers have signified their intention of . returning to Australia via San Francisco. Showing less damage than was feared, the Niagara tied up at the pier with 40 feet of the railing of the port bow of C deck and 10 feet of the superstructure of B deck shorn away; also three plates buckled above the water-line. Mr Lyons said the passengers took the collision philosophically after the first bit of excitement. No one was injured. The crash occurred at 8.10 p.m., as many of the passengers were sitting down to witness a motion picture programme. The pictures were resumed an hour later and a dance took place while the liner made back to port through the fog.
