League of Mothers

The monthly meeting of the League of Mothers was held on Thursday afternoon in Everybody’s Hall, Tay street, when Mrs Ruthven presided over a goood attendance of members. Mrs Thomson from the Milton branch was welcomed by the president. Vocal items were given during the afternoon by Mrs Aitchison and Miss R. Brown.

The speaker for the afternoon was Miss Brinkworth, matron of the Victoria Home, who gave an interesting address on the work of the home. She explained that it was a home for friendless and destitute girls and was erected over thirty years ago as a memorial to Queen Victoria who was deeply interested in the uplift of womanhood. The home was governed by an advisory board of five men and a committee of 12 women and the extensive increase in its work necessitated the recent addition of a maternity ward and a nursery. Miss Brinkworth spoke of the help and encouragement the home and its environment gave to the girls in teaching them to be good, clean-living and honest citizens. She illustrated her remarks by telling of numerous cases which had occurred under her regime. In conclusion she appealed to the League of Mothers for assistance in continuing the work of the home. She explained that there was no regular income to finance it and although it had never been in debt it was very often difficult for it to pay its way. She suggested that the League might see its way to start a scheme whereby each member paid threepence a month into a fund for the home, and at the same time mentioned that gifts such as clothing, fruit, meat and vegetables were always very welcome and were of great assistance.

Mrs Campbell proposed a vote of thanks to the speaker. It was decided to support the threepenny fund and Mrs Campbell was appointed treasurer. The next meeting will be the annual meeting and will be held on August 15,
