THE WHIPPETS

SOUTHLAND CLUB NOTES.

“Speed.”)

(By

Owners have been busy with their dogs in view of the Ohai meeting which will be held to-day. Several gooc? trials were recorded, and a win ought to come down this way. Potentate, who is in the maiden at Ohai, is well, but is short of a few gallops and more seasoned dogs are sure to beat him.

In a 200yds trial Young Ronnie was too good fox - the others, beating Havaspot by length with Rosamine a length away third. Johnny Walker found 71yds too much to give away, but the gallop will improve him, and given a firm track on Saturday he will run a great race.

Autyere, Fullerton and Johnny Walker are the fastest dogs in the south at present, and any owner who thinks he has better in his stables should trot him out. The owners of these dogs are prepared to match their dogs against all-comers.

August 3 will see a bumper meeting staged by the Southland Club. Good prizes will be offered and there will be races to suit all classes of dogs. Entries from the North Island are promised, and a few of the northern cracks will make the meeting interesting. The Ohai meeting has filled fairly well considering the weather conditions, and with eight entries in the cup the winner is well hidden. E. Boyle’s Miss New Zealand is about due for a cup and a win fox - this young owner will be popular. August 3 being the finish of a very successful year for the Southland Club, a cup race is being put on for the winnei - of evex-y race on the card on that date. The following dogs should rim well at Ohai: Extended Nursery, Pretty Rose and Blackman; Maiden, Settling Day and Rousille; Cup, Miss New Zealand and Linton Lad; on a dry track the backnxarker Johnny Walker may win. Lightweight, Some Guy and Madam Min; Hurdles, Fullerton and Gold Doll. (By “Oteramika.”) In three runs, each over about 130 yards, Margaret Bell gained the decision in all ovex - Trix Be Good and it appears that the expressed opinion of noted whippet judges may be at fault when they claimed the dog pup would be the faster. A newcomer in Clara Bow will probably make her debut at the next meeting on August 3 and will make her presence felt in miniature classes. The litter brother to Black and White is as big as two good sized whippets, but W. Rogers can be expected to fine him down to racing condition when he decides to start him.

In one 200-yard trial Bonnette proved too good for Mah Boy and Gay Girl, but later in the morning Mah Boy turned the tables and as Bonnette is now in excellent shape it can be taken for granted that Mah Boy will be to the fore at the next meeting. Quite a lot of schooling has taken place, evep the pups of all ages receiving a little education. Probably the two most promising hurdlers seen in action were Gay Girl and Mah Boy. A line on the form of the dogs from Minoru Kennels could not be obtained as they were worked alone. Blue Streak

strode out well and showed good promise. Overproof accounted for Princess Mahru and Clara Bow and later beat Black and White. Overproof, a full brother to Blue Streak (Fleet Pepper — Chevron), is decidedly on the small side, but for his size is as fast as anything on the track.

Rosetta beat Clara Bow and is very well just now, but although Loretta, from the same kennels, was at the track the writer did not notice her work.

Dainty Dinah headed Gay Girl and Jack Jameson has this bitch looking better than she was on last race day, but Gay Girl may not'have been giving of her best as she had had several previous runs. M. Orme had Wee Pepper at the track for an outing. This is the smallest pup of the litter ex Tipperary Lass by Fleet Pepper, but that is not saying she will not go fast.

Lady Be Good is fast getting into shape and if she trains on at her present rate will be heard from on August Miss G. did not race up to expectations at the last meeting, but is now showing good form, which it is hoped will continue till after the next meeting. Absentees from the tracks recently have been Winning Wave and Flame, but “Oteramika” hopes Miss Pasco is giving these dogs plenty of work in view of future meetings. The annual meeting of the National Association will be held next month when many matters of interest to all will come up for decision. The Inver, cargill Club will probably be called together early next week to consider remits.

The steeplechase should prove interesting at the next meeting, especially from the public’s point of view. A likely winner of such an event is Gay Girl. Miss Mah (Otakara— Kitty Mahru), a litter - sister to Mah Boy, has whelped a fine litter of four pups to Happy Days. There are three bitches and the dog pup is the image of Happy Days; only one resembles Miss Mah. These pups come from good breeding lines on both sides and" should be able to step fast.
