BOXING

FIXTURES AHEAD.

September 11, 12, and 13.—New Zealand amateur championships, at Dunedin.

NEWS OF THE WEEK

- (By

“Veritas.”)

An amateur tourney will me held at Otautau in the next week or so. The Southland amateux - championships will be held next month. The New Zealand amateur championships take place at Dunedin in September. It has been whispered that the S.B.A. is negotiating for the importation of Johnny Condon, the colourful Victorian middleweight. If he comes to Invercargill, he will probably be matched with Ern Jacobs. Jacobs fought untiringly against the rugged Nicol, but could not go with the champion when it came to matching strength of body and legs. Les Adams put up a surprisingly good performance against the useful Stirling and another match .with the ex-welter champion must be imminent. Adams just failed to head his opponent off, but might do so when they next meet. Stirling is the makings of a good boy, a good two-hander, and a keen slugger, but he is not the champion oux - Dunedin friends would have him be. He has yet much to learn, but as he is in the care of Les Murray there is every reason to suggest that he will not take long to pick up the finer points. In his endeavours to pile-drive Adams, either - to head ox - to body, he was as open as a book to a straight left. Adams soon exploited this hole in the defence and piled up a lot of points by beating Stirling to the punch with a left lead. It is hoped the S.B.A. will not lose time in matching Adams again. He is a “crowd pleaser” and requires fights to fit him fox - possible higher honours. Another - good match in the offing is a Jack —Stirling bout. OTAUTAU SCHOOL. C. A. Wylie, who is conducting boxing classes at Otautau, pens the following newsy letter to “Veritas”: — I am writing a few notes about the boys I have out here, and sending them in with Jack Kelly, who was out here ovex - the week-end and gave some of the boys a good work.out. A lot of our good “sports” in Invercargill seem to think it is time Jack tossed the game in, but the way he went against Bill Campbell the other night, I think he is more than good enough fox - any lightweight I have seen going in Southland. Bill Campbell is very fit and punching hard, and is as keen as mustard to have another cut at Sheehan, and is quite confident he can beat him. A. Paulin is going strong and is punching straight and hard, and is keen for a bout with any of the leading light or welterweights. . T. Francis, our novice welter, is disappointed with the way he fought in town at the last tourney, and promises to show up at the next. He is getting very speedy with his feet and hands. He has a great defence and is a straight and very hard puncher. W. Watson has also improved since he won the novice feather class, and has developed a good straight left and a real knock-out with his right. He will be hard to beat if he sticks at it.

J. Watson, his younger - brother, is also going well, and will be hard in the bantamweights. He is much quicker than his brother and has a better defence. Fie carries a good punch in either hand.

R. Pettitt, our novice lightweight, is also going strong. He is punching snappier and cleaner and hopes to make up fox' his loss at the last tourney. A. Rennie is improving, although he has not been too well since the last tourney. He is keen to meet any of the local heavyweights, and promises to show up well in his next fight. We have two or three novices getting ready for the next tourney. They have not fought before. They are P. Bone (flyweight), H. Williams (paperweight) and J. Simmons (feather). All are shaping very well. We will be running a tourney up her? this month.
