GERMANS WIN

DAVIS CUP MATCH s AUSTRALIANS BEATEN BY FOUR TO ONE ALL SINGLES LOST (United Press Assn.— Telegraph Copyright.) Berlin, June 16. The Davis Cup match between Ger ? many and Australia was won by Germany by four rubbers to one. Ino Germans won both singles on Friday and the Australians took the doubles on Saturday. The remaining singles were played to-day and resulted: G. von Cramm (Germany) defeated V. B. McGrath (Australia) 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, ’h. Henkel (Germany) defeated J. H. Crawford (Australia) 2-6, 6-3, 9-7, 4-6, There was a large, attendance. The day was windy and light rain was falling as McGrath began serving. McGrath fought hard in the first set, ‘but the German, running him from side to side and then coming in for the winning volley, took the set. Von Cramm went ahead to 2-0 in the . second set, but better serving and driving by McGrath enabled him to win the set. McGrath handled von Cramm’s kicking service well and put more vigour into his backhand. ‘, In the third set McGrath made a number of costly mistakes. McGrath vainly appealed for a cessation of play owing to rain. Von Cramm produced some sparkling shots in the fourth set to pass McGrath, but the Australian became steadier and from 2-4 won four games. McGrath lapsed in the fifth set after a hard fight in the fourth, and von Cramm put more speed into his service, forcing the Australian to make weak returns from which von Cramm hit winners. McGrath staved off one match point before losing after a great fight and Australia passed out of the Davis Cup competition. Crawford was never seriously troubled to win the first set against Henkel, but in the second and third sets Crawford was too slow in moving about the court. Henkel played very steadily and troubled Crawford with his drop shots. Crawford hit harder in the fourth set with success. Both played for safety in the final set, but the German proved steadier and by defeating Crawford completed Aus-? tralia’s rout.

With Australia losing to Germany and South Africa to‘Czechoslovakia it was a bad week-end for the British Empire. McGrath did well to take von Cramm to the fifth set, but Crawford’s defeat by Henkel furnishes further proof of the bad patch which the Australian champion has struck. Those Southlanders who had visions of the Davis Cup being brought in triumph to Australia and of crossing the Tasman to witness stirring contests will have to look further into the future. Czechoslovakia may extend but should • not defeat Germany. The Americans’ form is not easy to gauge, but it is probable that they will earn the right to meet Britain in the challenge round. It will be surprising if Perry, Austin and Hughes cannot repel the invaders. EUROPEAN ZONE FINAL CZECHSLOVAKIA v. GERMANY. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) Prague, June 14.

In the Davis Cup Menzel and Malacek (Czechoslovakia) defeated Farquharson and Kirby (South Africa) 9-11, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Czechoslovakia meets Germany in the final of the European zone.
