FORTIFIED LINES
FRENCH FRONTIERS ELABORATE SYSTEM OF DEFENCES UNDERGROUND PASSAGES (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 9.40 p.m.) Paris, June 17. “The building of forts is only comparable to the gigantic operations of the old Egyptians,” declares M. Rucart, a member of the Chamber’s Army Commission, in an article in Le Matin after visiting the French frontier fortified lines extending from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier. He states that in the Metz group of forts two million cubic feet of reinforced concrete and steel has been used. The forts are linked by miles oi underground passages ranging from 90 to 120 feet deep. The defences also include sections of railway line stuck perpendicularly into the earth like great teeth, over which it is claimed not even a tank could pass
