NIGHTCAPS NOTES

THE PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNUAL MEETING (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting of subscribers and committee was held in the library on Thursday night. Mr E. Mason was in the chair and there was a good attendance present. The annual report and balancesheet disclosing a credit balance of £ 1 15/- was presented by the secretary, Mrs T. Thompson. After a brief discussion the balancesheet, which was considered satisfactory, was adopted. The secretary stated that during the year electric light had been installed in the library. This had proved a great boon and members would recognize that the expense incurred in this direction (£3 5/i) would be non-recurring. Over 40 new books had been placed on the shelves during the term, the cost being over £6. Mrs E. J. Thomson and Messrs T. Gibb and S. Sice were thanked for their 'donations of books. Messrs J. Sice, E. Thompson, J. McLeod and Allan Sheddan, who had acted for various terms as honorary librarians, were also thanked by the chairman for their services. A donation of £1 1/- had been received from the Ohai Railway Board and this donation had helped the funds of the library considerably. The following were elected to the executive for the ensuing term: President, Mr E. Mason; treasurer, Mr S. Sice; secretary, Mrs E. J. Thompson; hon. librarian, Mr Allan Sheddan. Basketball. A meeting of the committee of the Nightcaps Basketball Club was held on Thursday evening Mr L. Tamblyn being elected chairman. The chairman explained that the meeting was held to complete arrangements for the tournament to be held in the hall on June 28. It was decided that arrangements could be made for 30 teams to compete and it was hoped that many entries would be received. While the tournament was in progress dancing would be carried on in the supper room and Mrs Rushton,- sen., and Mrs Pomton were delegated to take charge of the catering for the function. The following officials werfe appointed: Timekeeper and scorer, Mr 1. Burgess; score steward, Mr O. Berry; general stewards, Messrs A. Paul and L. Tamblyn; referees, Messrs A. Grant, J. W. Martin and O. Berry. Loyal Nightcaps Juvenile Lodge. The fortnightly meeting of the above lodge was held in the lodge rooms on Tuesday evening. N.G. Bro. W. Robertson presided and there was a large attendance of members. It being the first anniversary meeting of the lodge the following district officers were present: Prov. G.M. Bro. J. S. Henderson, I.P.P.G.M. Bro. M A. Reidy, D.P.G.M. Bro. J. Wilson, P.C.S. Bro. A. B. Edmonds, Prov. Treas. Bro. A. Ray McKenzie. , ‘ , The routine lodge business was dealt with and the visitors were received in an appropriate manner. In proposing the toast of the visitors V.G. Bro. A. Excell welcomed the district officers to the Nightcaps Lodge. In the course ot his remarks Bro. Excell suggested that a shield similar to the J. T. Veitch Shield be offered to the district tor ritual competition amongst the juvenile lodges of Southland. Prov. G.M. Bro. J. S. Henderson replied to the visitors toast. He congratulated the Nightcaps boys on the way that they had carried out the business of their lodge. He had been fortunate enough to be present at the opening of the juvenile lodge in Nightcaps and was exceedingly pleased at the advancement made during only one year’s work. Bro. Henderson considered the idea suggested by Bro. Excell regarding a shield tor juvenile competition, was an excellent one. The district committee would take up the suggestion and he felt sure .one would be given for the competition. At the conclusion of the usual lodge toasts the visitors were entertained at an enjoyable social hour during which supper was dispensed. Coursing Club. A meeting of the committee of the club was held on Thursday night. Mr W. Dahren presided over a full attendance of members. The meeting was convened to finalize arrangements for a big meeting to be held on June 21 and 22. The chairman stated that the club had been very successful in its quest for hares, there being now just on 40 available for the meeting. Personal. Mr I. G. Agnew, who was recently transferred from Balfour, has commenced duties as counter clerk at the Nightcaps Post Office. The weekly crib and euchre tourney in aid of funds for the convent was held on Tuesday. The prize-winners were _Crib: Ladies, Mrs A. Laidlaw; men, E. Boyle. Euchre: Ladies, Mrs A. Colligan; men, T. O’Donnell. Mr and Mrs W. Lindrum and Mr Clark McConachy were guests at the Railway Hotel during the week. Owing to the inclement weather there was not a large attendance at the fortnightly euchre held in the Bowling Club’s pavilion. The prize-winners were: Ladies, Mrs J. S. Johnstone; men, Mr S. Sice. Mrs T. Horner, Bayswater, spent a few days in Nightcaps as the guest of Mrs J. Malcolm. Mr R. Nimmo left during the week to continue his studies at the university in Dunedin. Miss Alice Balloch, Matailra, is

spending a holiday with Mrs I. Fowler. The Methodist Church held a bring and buy fair during the week. The fair was a success, the produce etc. meeting with a ready sale and the church funds will benefit considerably.
