WHEELBARROW DERBY
CHALLENGE WAGER. (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) Melbourne, June 16. The Wheelbarrow Derby began at Beechworth yesterday at 1.8 p.m. in the presence of a tremendous crowd. A brass band was playing, aeroplanes flew overhead and the streets were decorated. Mounted troopers had to keep the crowd back. Mr Parkinson quickly adjusted the weight of his fellow townsman to his arms and with the aid of a shoulder strap strode out manfully followed by a procession of cars and cheering people. He covered six miles in 4 hours 20 minutes with 76 stops. He hopes to cover at least 13 miles to-day. Latest advice is that Mr Parkinson to-day covered 11 miles.
A message from Melbourne on June 4 stated: Considerable interest is being taken in Victoria, with much publicity, in a challenge wager of £2O a-side between two prominent citizens of Beechworth, Mr T. Parkinson and Mr S. Evans, the former undertaking to push Mr Evans from Beechworth to Mt Buffalo Chalet, 50i miles, in eight days in an ordinary wheelbarrow. The event will begin on June 15 when a public holiday will be observed in Beechworth., Mr Parkinson is training strenuously. Each evening he wheels a local gaol warder weighing 16 stone for two and a half miles in a wheelbarrow. ____________
