WAIKAKA NOTES

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING. (From Our Correspondent.) Heavy snow fell during the week and on Wednesday some of the roads were impassable. Heavy rain set in on Thursday and by Friday most of the snow had disappeared. The first of a series of fortnightly euchre parties conducted by the Oddfellows’ Lodge was held on Thursday night last when there was a fair attendance. First prizes for ladies and men were won by Miss McConnell and Mr T. Brown respectively while the second prizes were won by Mrs O. Black and Mr C. Bennett. At the monthly meeting of the Waikaka Women’s Institute Mrs A. Styles presided over a good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy with Mrs Hodgkinson in her recent bereavement was carried. A letter was received from the federation regarding folk dancing and Misses Green, Cummings, Matheson and Curran were appointed to attend as delegates. Mrs Rennie reported on the recent federation meeting while Mrs Styles reported on the drama committee meeting and Mrs A. Ross reported on the recent drama festival. Mrs Rennie congratulated members who took part ip the drama festival on their good performance. Mrs Turnbull, on behalf of the members of the teams, thanked Mrs Ross, the producer, for her assistance. A pound day was held, the proceeds to go to Victoria Home, while a collection of garments was received for the Gore Clothing Club. It was decided that the birthday party be celebrated by a social afternoon, members to take a friend. An interesting demonstration on electric sewing machines was given by Mr and Mrs L. Graham, Gore, who at the conclusion of the demonstration were thanked by Mrs Styles. At the termination of the meeting, afternoon tea was served by Mesdames W. Herron, A. Ross and D. McKenzie. Miss M. Rankin (Sydney), who has been visiting her parents, returned north at the beginning of the week on her return Journey. Miss Molly Murray has been visiting friends In Dunedin. Miss Pollock, Oamaru, Is spending a short holiday in the district. Mr and Mrs W. Kelly and Misses Kelly (Greenvale) have boon spending a holiday In tho north.
