Miss Margaret Lush, St. John’s Girls’ School, returns home during the weekend from Dipton where she has been the guest of Mrs W. L. Cunningham, Castle Downs. Mr and Mrs J. Pears, Mossburn, Mr and Mrs W. Swale, Limelulls, Miss Mollie McGregor, Mount Linton and Miss Mollie Pears, Etalvale, were among the country visitors to town for the Golf Ball on Thursday. f Guests at the Grand Hotel during the week included Mr and Mrs Dummett (Geelong, Victoria); Mr and Miss McGregor (Mt. Miss June Campbell, Layard street, has returned to Dunedin after spending a few days in Invercargill during which she was the guest of honour at a number of parties to mark her twenty-first birthday, when she was the recipient of many appropriate good wishes and gifts. Visitors to Invercargill for the Ait-kerW-McCrostie wedding, which took place last Wednesday, were Mr and Mrs C. O. Mathias, who have returned to their home in Dunedin, Mrs Hugh Smeaton, also of Dunedin, who will return north at the beginning of the week, Mrs I. Aitken, of Ohai, and Mr and Mrs D. Denny, of Winton. Recent guests at the Club Hotel included Miss M. McArthur (Riverton); Mrs C. Mathias, Miss S. Mcßeath (Dunedin); Miss A. Brown (Gore); Miss W. Hannan (Tuatapere); Mr and Mrs R. G. Chartres (Wendonside); Mr and Mrs J. M. Pears (Nightcaps); Mr and Mrs D. McGill (Mataura); Mr and Mrs A. Cameron (Parawa), and Miss I. Ashley (Invercargill). A very happy meeting took place in Dunedin recently when Miss Florence Ann Saker, principal of a girls’ high school in Calcutta, met Miss Jean Begg, world general secretary for the Y.W.C.A., states the Auckland Weekly News. Miss Begg works in India, Burma and Ceylon, and Miss Saker is very thrilled at the prospect of seeing a lot of her new-found friend when she returns to India at the end of the year. Both Miss Saker and Miss Begg are very much interested in the youth of India and in work among the girls, and have been giving combined lectures in Dunedin to very appreciative audiences.

Amongst those who attended the first day of the meet of the Birchwood Hounds at Mossburn recently were Mr and Mrs W. Young (Mossburn), Major and Mrs Bond (Dunrobin), Mr and Mrs Angus Macdonald (The Plains Station), Mr and Mrs A. F. Speight (Redcliff), Mr and Mrs W. E. Hazlett (Invercargill), Mr and Mrs W. L. Cunningham (Castle Downs), Mr and Mrs J. L. Hazlett (Oreti), Misses M. Pears (Etalvale), T. McKay (Invercargill), Margaret Lush (Invercargill) and Misses Nan and June and Masters John Cunningham (Castle Downs) and Kenneth Pears (Mossburn), who rode their ponies, Peter. Trixie, Biddie and Jo respectively.

Mrs R. J. Gilmour, Herbert street, president of the Southland Women’s Club, leaves on Tuesday for Dunedin, where she will attend the celebrations in connection with the twenty-first anniversary of the Otago Women’s Club which will be held during the next few days, and commenced yesterday afternoon with a tea party in honour of the original members of the club. On Tuesday evening a dinner is to be held in the Tudor Hall; on Wednesday, a tea party will be given by the president. Lady Ferguson, to the grandmothers of the club, and on Friday evening there will be a party in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall. Visitors from Oamaru, Christchurch, Gore and Invercargill are expected, as well as from the north.
