SOUTHLAND IN ENGLAND.
To the Editor.
Sir,—lt is but a truism to say that the long arm of coincidence stretches in many directions. As is only natural while away from England, I like to keep in touch with affairs in the Old Country. The English papers, which are sent to me, are eagerly awaited. You can imagine my surprise when receiving my mail at Bluff and opening the pages of one of our most widely read Sunday newspapers, to find that practically the 'first item to attract my attention was the enclosed photograph. What chain of circumstance enabled the publishers to obtain the snap is of small yimportance; but, the fact, that they considered it would the sympathetic interest of their readers is self-evident proof of the news value attached to an}’ item, however small, connected with our colonial cousins. For myself I am confident that, if the “Surf-girl of Orati” ever visits the Old Country she will receive as cheery a greeting as the one she waved to us from the pages of a great newspaper. Although my first experience of New Zealand weather does not. encourage me to follow the example of the jolly young lady *of the photograph, I look forward with pleasant anticipation to spending many happy days with your hospitable people with whom I hope to come in contact during the stays of my ship in your parts.—l am, etc., LESLIE A. HUGHES. ss. Westmoreland, Port Chalmers, June 13, 1935. „ "
