WOMEN’S DIVISION
MAKAREWA BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Makarewa branch’ of the W.D.F.U. was held on Thursday, Mrs McDowell presiding over a fair attendance. A report of the recent executive meeting was read by Mrs McClean. The roll call, “Demonstration I like most,” brought forward some ideas for future demonstrations. The competition, “Best bloom in my garden,” was won by Mrs Wright. The competition for “Best darned sock,” was won by Mrs Wright, Airs Kidd second. Next month’s roll call isi “My favourite rose” and the competition, four pieces of shortbread. There will be a demonstration on rose pruning. Arrangements for dressmaking classes to be held in the district were discussed. DRUMMOND BRANCH. Mrs Kincaid presided at the monthly meeting of the W.D.F.U. which was held in the hall on Wednesday, June 12. The secretary was instructed to send a contribution to headquarters towards a presentation for Miss Connor, Dominion secretary, who is resigning. The president read the report of the annual executive meeting held in. Invercargill. Misses Jean and Ona .Linklater delighted those present with a violin and pianoforte duet and had to respond to an encore. A competition was won by Mrs R. .J. Woods with Miss Officer second. Points for best bloom were: Mrs Linklater 1, Mrs R. Hallum 2 and Miss Officer 3. Afternoon tea terminated another very successful afternoon, hostesses being Mesdames W. E. Lindsay, R. Hallum and A. Linklater. RIVERTON BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Riverton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in More’s committee room on June 11, Mrs Hopcroft presiding. The president spoke feelingly of the passing of several old identities in the persons of Mrs Clark, Mr Paul, Mr Akhurst and Mr Fleck. A motion of sympathy was carried in the usual manner. A letter was received from the Institute for the Blind asking members of the W.D.F.U. to take charge of local organization for their band and concert party. It was resolved to ask the Returned Soldiers’ Association to assist in making necessary arrangements. The “best bloom” competition resulted as follows: Mrs Helm 1, Miss Wilkinson 3. Mrs Dickson gave; a most interesting demonstration on the art of smocking.
