WOMEN’S DIVISION

WINTON BRANCH MONTHLY MEETING (From Our Correspondent.) At the monthly meeting of the Winton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers' Union on Thursday last, the president, Mrs T. S. Smith, presided over an attendance of 40 members. , , , . Mrs Smith referred to the deaths of the relatives of three members, Mrs F. Blee, Mrs J. A. Broom and Mrs M. Reilly, and as a mark of respect members stood for a moment in silence. Miss M. Cowie wrote resigning from the office of secretary. The resignation was accepted with regret. Mrs Smith referred in eulogistic terms to the excellent work that had been accomplished by Miss Cowie as secretary since the formation of the branch at Winton. The president extended her congratulations to local competitors who had gained successes at the recent Southland Winter Show. Misses M. Robertson, P. Andrews and M. Mell wrick were chosen to take part in the girls’ educational week at Invercargill- , , The president referred to the good work being carried on by the housekeeping scheme, and sought the assistance of members in this connection. Mrs Moore, of Gisborne, gave a few interesting remarks on the activities of the Women's Institute and other matters relative to Gisborne. WALLACETOWN BRANCH. The monthy meeting of the W.D.F.U. Wallacetown branch was held at the residence of Mrs H. Townshend on May 30. Mrs John Gray presided over a large attendance of members. _ The meeting opened with the creed. Visitors from the Ryal Bush and Tussock Creek branches were present. Miss Ellen Scott was elected to represent the branch at the Educational Week to be held in Invercargill from June 10. Competition results were: Four eggless biscuits, Miss Nellie Gray 1, Mrs W. L. Gray 2, Miss McGearty and Mrs Jolly (equal) 3. The following was decided for the June meeting: Roll call; old photograph; competition best darned stocking or sock. Mrs Davidson, Ryal Bush, then gave a very instructive demonstration on cane tray making, after which Mrs A. C. Gray thanked Mrs Davidson; also Mrs Townshend for the use of her home. Mrs John Scott, on behalf of members, then thanked the three hostesses for the afternoon and the meeting closed. COLAC BAY BRANCH. The members of the Colac W.D.F.U. branch held their monthly meeting at Mrs Pearce’s residence, Wakapatu. The meeting was opened by the reading of the creed. The best flower competition, judged by Mrs D. Pollard, was won by Miss M. Roberts, Miss P. Neilson 2, and Mrs Neilson 3. Most dishes made from a fourquarter leg of mutton competition was won by Mrs Pearce, Mrs Wadsworth and Mrs Crengle equal. The roll call for next meeting is to be “What noises we most dislike.” Competition for next meeting to be something new made from something old, and each article to be given to W.D.F.U. jumble sale to be held during August, date to be decided at next meeting) An enjoyable meeting closed with Mrs Pearce being hostess to afternoon tea. WOODLANDS. The monthly meeting of the Woodlands branch of the W.D.F.U. was held 6n June 6, Mrs Frew (president) presiding over a good attendance of members. An appeal from “Children’s Health Camp” for clothing was well responded to. A motion of sympathy was passed with the sick of the district and all were wished a speedy recovery. Misses F. Henderson and M. Robbie were appointed to attend “Girls’ Educational Week” in Invercargill. Mrs Renwick gave a very interesting and instructive talk on the creed which was an inspiration to all. Mrs Walker proposed a vote of thanks. The roll call “Eggless Biscuit Recipe” was well responded to. A competition, “Eggless Biscuits,” resulted: Mrs Walker 1, Miss Campbell 2, Mrs Adamson 3. Best bloom: Miss Campbell 1, Miss Nicol 2, Mrs Gormack 3. A very fine demonstration on “Pastinello Painting” was given by Miss Crengle. Some beautifully finished work was shown. Miss M. Robbie proposed a vote of thanks. It was decided to hold an euchre evening. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Walker, Misses Campbell, Henderson and Frew. MORTON MAINS BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Morton Mains W.D.F.U. was held on June 5, when Mrs Warnock presided over a fair attendance of members. The president reported on the executive meeting, drawing attention to the dressmaking classes which, are proposed to be held by the Women’s Division. Mrs Blackmore reported on the visit to the A.C.E. meeting at Edendale and gave some details of the library scheme. Tire play, entitled, “Workhouse Ward” was read by Mrs Carson, Miss McLauchlin, and Miss Marsh (Wyndham) and much enjoyed. A demonstration on basket-making and trays with tussock and raffia was given by Mrs Carson and it was greatly appreciated by the members. The competition for the chocolate cake, which was judged by Mrs Richardson, of Wyndham and Miss McLauchlin, was won by Miss Hamilton first, Mrs McFadyen second, Mrs Warnock third. Many beautiful blooms of chrysanthemums were entered for the “best bloom, competition,” which resulted as follows: Miss Ellen Sheat first, Mrs A. H. Sheat second and Mrs McFadyen third. Aftemon tea was dispensed by the members. On behalf of the branch Mrs Calder moved a vote of thanks to Mrs Carson for her interesting demonstration and to others who had assisted that afternoon. DIPTON BRANCH. The monthly meeting was held on Friday, when the president, Mrs McDonald, presided over a large attendance of members and friends to honour tha occasion of a visit from Mrs Ward, Dominion president, who brought the dressmaking instructress, Miss Howell. Mrs Ward reported on the activities of the Women’s Division, drawing attention to the philanthropical side of the work as well as the social side. Miss Howell gave an interesting demonstration on drafting, 24 members enrolling for the dress-making class. Afternoon tea was dispensed, after which Mrs Lilico, who has severed her connection with Dipton, was presented with a coloured glass bowl. In handing he? the gift Mrs McDonald eulogized the assistance given to the branch by the guest of honour in giving useful recipes and demonstrations. Mrs Lilico suitably replied. Mrs McDonald then moved a vote of thanks to Mrs Ward. Hostesses were Mesdames Martin, McGill, Johnston, J. S. McDonald and- Miss McGill.
