AT LIVERPOOL
MR LYONS WELCOMED.
LORD MAYOR’S DINNER.
(United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, June, 13. The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor T. Richardson, tendered a dinner to Mr Lyons at the Town Hall, which is nearly two centuries old. The guests were seated in the ballroom which Edward VII. described as one of the finest he had ever entered. Three huge chandeliers, each containing 750,000 pieces of glass, glittered on the silver and gold plate given by Lord Mayors since the seventeenth century. The ballroom is one of the show places of Liverpool. It has been visited by kings. Among the Mayoral regalias attached to the wall is a pair of staves used to lever mail coaches out of ruts in the roads in the old posting days. Mr Lyons said he wished Australia was doing more trade with Liverpool. He believed that the time was near when Australia would be nearly all British. Sometimes one heard of settlers’ failures. There were failures everywhere; such people would have been failures had they remained in England.
