INVERCARGILL NURSE. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 11. The first holder of the Florence Nightingale Memorial Scholarship is Miss Elizabeth R. Bridges, of Invercargill, who has been selected for appointment as nurse instructor in the Department of Health. Miss Bridges went through her general training at the Southland Hospital. She will leave next month for England to gain further experience before taking up her appointment in New Zealand. Miss Bridges has had a distinguished career in the nursing profession in Southland. She received her training at the Southland Hospital, being a member of the staff there for twelve years. Possessing a remarkable examination record, Miss Bridges secured top marks for the Dominion in the general nurses’ examination and in the Maternity examination. She was awarded a diploma for post-graduate work and has completed a course in. Plunket training. During the absence of Miss Ross, matron of the Southland Hospital, on a visit to Great Brilain about two years ago, Miss Bridges jvas acting-matron. Recently she has been taking midwifery training at St. Helens. She was offered the position jf matron at Gore Hospital,’ but was idvised to take advantage of this opportunity of study and experience abroad, and her success in being selected from 24 candidates from all parts of New Zealand is a high compliment. Miss Bridges is a daughter of Mr and Mrs William Bridges, South Invercargill.
